Sākuru Utasa
Sākuru Utasa
Handwoven Japanese Cotton
Inspired by the geometric kimono robes found in our research of the Ainu people, the approach for the printed pattern stems from circular motions. Made with a combination of utensils, such as quarter circle blocks, flexible thinner blocks made from rubber and wider blocks to make the traditional intersection cross. Sākuru Utasa which translates to 'circle with intersecting cross', is made with all natural colours and features a 4-grid form with natural finish. The material is a medium weight, hand spun and handwoven cotton, created by master weaver Ko Uchimura San, when dyed and washed, leaves and ominous khaki warmth, reminding the yarn of its roots in nature.
