Sik Toh Suponji
Sik Toh Suponji
Handwoven Indian Cotton
The Sik motif is maybe the most re-purposed graphic pattern found in our research of Ainu people's textiles. Here you can see the outline of the shape, which translates to star, filled in and sharp to the eye. The contemporary approach of block print and dyeing the cotton involves primitive utensils made from wood and using a sponge like shape to create intense markings which fade with movement to create the geometric pattern, which from far appears as a sea of dark and light, reflective of the symbols adorning the skin of the Ainu people.
